UVB at the Moosejaw Folk Festival 2010

WHAT: Moosejaw is a weekend-long folk music and dance festival organized by Minneapolis' own Wild Goose Chase Cloggers.

WHERE: Moosejaw is held at the Maplelag Resort in a beautiful, thickly wooded location near Detroit Lakes, MN.

WHO CAN ATTEND? Anyone! Moosejaw is open to the public.

We will play two balls, one on Friday and one on Saturday night, as well instruct several workshops on Saturday:

  • Join us for a Repertoire Workshop: We'll teach some of our favorite Ukrainian and Latvian tunes!
  • Along with Donald LaCourse from the Ethnic Dance Theatre, we will instruct a workshop on Ukrainian and Latvian folk dances.
  • OUR OWN NATALIE NOWYTSKI will teach a workshop on Eastern European Vocal Traditions!

Moosejaw is a great opportunity to get out of the city and into some folk music and dance in a beautiful Northwoods setting!

MORE ABOUT Moosejaw: Moosejaw is a festival largely dedicated to American folk music, though each year a local, Minneapolis-based folk group is featured. The festival organizers, the Wild Goose Chase Cloggers, performed at the prestigious Baltica Festival last summer in Latvia, where they befriended several Latvian folk groups as well as the Bozhychi Ensemble from Kyiv, Ukraine. Our fellow band member Stefan Iwaskewycz has performed at Baltica--with his wife Zinta Pone, who has herself taught us our Latvian material--and Bozhychi have provided much of the inspiration for our Ukrainian Village Band. The Geese are keen to have us recreate some of that Ukrainian and Latvian and atmosphere at Moosejaw!

New Year's Eve/Malanka 2009-2010!

I. Ukrainian and Latvian Community New Year's Eve Ball РАЗОМ-KOPA:

This past December 31st, 2009 we played for a joint Ukrainian and Latvian community New Year's Eve Ball. The turnout was great--better than expected!--and the evening a success.

Hopefully this will be only the first New Year's Eve celebrated РАЗОМ-KOPA--"Together" in Ukrainian and Latvian, respectively--at the Ukrainian Event Center.

The idea for a joint Latvian and Ukrainian community New Year's Eve Ball was proposed by a fellow in the Ukrainian community who knew that:

a) Stefan, one of our band members, is married to Zinta Pone, a Latvian American woman who is a folk musician;

b) the Latvian community of the Twin Cities sold their community center a few years ago;

c) a contigent of Latvians regularly show up for each of our Evenings at Kramarczuk's!

We learned for the event several new Ukrainian tunes and a dozen or so new waltzes, fox trots, polkas and tangos that are beloved of the Latvian community. We will add selections from all this music to the set list for our regular Evenings at Kramarczuk's!

Best of all, we had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a few good Latvian friends and family:

Amanda Jatniece on accordion, recorder, and vocals; Gunta Pone on vocals; Zinta Pone on accordion; Janis Zeltins on vocals.

II. Malanka at St. Michael's and George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church:

We played this year for Malanka at St. Michael's and George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, and what fun it was! There was a terrific turnout and great dancing all night long. We played our longest Kolomyjka yet!

UVB & Virsky National Ensemble of Ukraine

This past October, 2010, we had the privilege of playing for events surrounding the performance of the Virsky National Ensemble of Ukraine in the Twin Cities.

First, we played in the lobby of Northrup Auditorium on the U of MN campus before the concert, and we played again for a Zabava / reception following the concert at the Ukrainian Event Center!
